Warner Bros. Acquires Screen Rights to 'The Lonely Dog' - Get Ready for an Epic Dachshund Movie

What on earth is 'The Lonely Dog?' It's a bit complicated, but here's an excerpt from the East & Bays Courier which explains it pretty well:

Alveridgea and the Legend of the Lonely Dog started life as sketches and paintings by New Zealand landscape artist Ivan Clarke to accompany the stories he told his kids about the family’s pet dachshund.
As the Lonely Dog concept grew Mr Clarke added partners Graham Burt and Garry Phipps, both publicists from St Heliers, to the pot and with author Stu Duval’s help, they crafted a fully realised fantasy world.
It was launched as a book which catapulted into the imaginations of people in just the right place and time.
The founder of five-time Oscar winner Weta Workshop Richard Taylor created a range of bronze sculptures to complement Mr Clarke’s works, followed closely by the collector’s books, the Almalogue.
Only 95 numbered and signed copies of this hand-crafted book have been made, with 70 released for sale. All have sold, the last sales reaching an incredible $60,000 a piece.
Now Warner Bros has acquired the screen rights to Ivan Clarke’s dog’s tale and in the coming months Hollywood legend Akiva Goldsman will breathe life to this up and coming legend.
Mr Goldsman will produce the movie through his Warner Brothers-based Weed Road banner.
It is being touted as "the next big thing" to come from New Zealand roots and is already being compared to fantasy greats like Lord of the Rings.

Read more at the East & Bays Courier.

If you've never done so, we highly recommend checking out The Lonely Dog website. This won't be the last you'll hear of The Lonely Dog; the Day of the Dachshund is coming.

The Stories This Piebald Could Tell

Meet one of the 67 dogs found living in filthy, stacked bird cages in the West Englewood neighborhood in Chicago on Tuesday, March 24, 2009. We're sure that this little black and tan piebald got adopted from Chicago's Anti-Cruelty Society over the weekend. Source. Thanks to our pal 'Clancy' for sending in the link!

Typical Dachshund Heads

(click image to enlarge and read)

The slope of the skull line to the bridge of the nose and the insertion of the cartilage should be ideally so flat that a ruler might be laid on it, and from the insertion of the nasal cartilage there should be ideally a short slope downwards producing a Roman nose (so-called Ramsnase). There should be no furrow on the bridge of the nose or on the skull. The skull should only be only slightly arched, that is, it should be a so-called flat skull, with the occipital bone somewhat prominent. The lips should not be too heavy, since they would offer an easy target for the enemy.

Huh? This great old image is from The Dachshund or Teckel by Herbert Sanborn, 1937. Click on the image to read which heads were true to the breed standard at the time.

Texas Woman Badly Injured After Refusing to Leave Dachshund in Burning Apartment

Meet red smooth 'Minnie,' and her human's daughter, Charisse Harris, who hail from Houston Texas. Minnie's human was cooking on Saturday when the fire started inside her apartment; the landlord came to get her out, and she refused to leave without her dachshund. She was unconscious when the firefighters carried her out. Minnie found her own way out and was not injured.

“I’m not surprised that she would do something like that because I know how she feels about this dog and she will risk her own life for this dog,” said a tearful Charisse Harris, the victim's daughter. "She treats the dog like a person. It's like her other daughter."

Read the rest and see a video at KHOU.com. We're hoping Mrs. Harris has a quick recovery.

Dachshunds Attack Macaulay Culkin

by Near Modern Disaster

The Trials and Tribulations of Being a Small Dog in a BIG WORLD

Just look at the sweet face on 12.5-year-old red smooth Jake as he finds comfort in his human's arms. Jake was attacked by a bull mastiff and a rottweiler last week when he went outside for a walk with his human, Terri Kuske, of Lebanon, Oregon. Although she checked for her neighbors' large dogs before she took him out, they surprised her and Jake, resulting in the mastiff at his throat, and the rottweiler at his belly. She laid down on top of her boy, who was bleeding profusely, to stop the attack.

Jake spent just one night at the Animal Hospital before being released to Kuske’s care. He had six puncture wounds, a punctured lung and hernias and was traumatized.
Kuske got one puncture wound that went all the way through one finger and into another as well as scrapes on other fingers. She was treated at Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital.

Footlong

Oh my goodness, we laughed and laughed and laughed and laughed at this one! "Footlong"- An original music video by Jeremiah Watkins: This is an original music video about the coolest dog in the world, Footlong. I composed the song and wrote the lyrics. Here are the lyrics...

So I got this little dog, his name is Footlong.
Some call him a dachshund, I call him a wiener dog.
You better not go near him when he eats his food,
If you wanna keep your fingers, stay away from this dude.
He's a vicious little puppy, He'll bite your face off.
Like that Nicholas Cage movie except way more tough.
Beware of the dog is not just an expression,
An even more serious thing than the Great Depression.

O Footlong! How do you do the things you do?
You're such a cool dog, and a boy's dream come true.
I remember that one day, when I was just walkin' by.
Then you got angry, and tried to bite out my eye.

Yeah he's a true little thug, a true little "G."
When he gets that peanut butter, he's so happy.
Yo he's my footlong, not some 5 dollar footlong,
They don't sell him at Subway, that would just be wrong.
Footlong's my sidekick, Footlong's my pal.
He even helps me when it comes to the gals.
We like to drink that O.J. called Tropicana,
My footlong wiener dog wears a bandana.

O Footlong! How do you do the things you do?
You're such a cool dog, and a boy's dream come true.
When you play with your bear, it really scares me,
I hope that you calm down soon, and become merry.

I've got a footlong wiener, dog.
A footlong wiener, dog.
Don't touch my footlong wiener, dog.
I've got a footlong wiener dog.
"Actually, He's more like 18 inches."
I've got a foot and a half long wiener dog.

Puppy Mill In Our Own Back Yard

WARNING: DISTURBING VIDEO. It's not often that you hear about puppy mills in the city, but we're not surprised by much anymore. 70 dogs were found in a home on Chicago's south side, where the dogs were without food and water, and were living in small bird cages. Appears to be mostly a "pocket-pup" operation, but there was a dachshund or two at least, from what we can tell. Above is footage of the raid from the Cook County Sheriff's Department. In addition to the puppies, police confiscated one pound of marijuana, a handgun and $3,000 cash.

Here is one of the dachshunds who is looking for a home...a pretty little piebald.

The Tale of the Dachshund

Via Kitsch Slapped, Slapping You With Kitsch — As Often As Possible. Pop Culture Right In Your Kisser:

The Tale of the Dachshund, A Humorous Song, by Harvey B. Gaul:

I had a little dachshund once,
So long, you haven’t any notion,
The time it took to notify
His tail of his emotion;
And so it happened when his eyes,
Were full of woe and sadness,
His tail would still be wagging on
Because of previous gladness.

* He thinner grew each day,
Till he stretched himself away!
I had a dachshund once
The hot-dogs know him now.

* “Text for ending is optional.”

The greatest word in the world, DACHSHUND, has led to both crushing defeats and glorious victories for spelling bee contestants all over the country in the last few months. Above, it's a glorious victory for Thomas Harkins, 13, an eighth-grader at Dyker Heights Intermediate School in Brooklyn as he proudly holds the trophy as winner of the New York Daily News Spelling Bee. Congratulations! Thomas will advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington on May 26-28.

The tense competition Monday at the Hunter College High School auditorium came down to a faceoff between Thomas and another Brooklynite, Diksha Brahmbhatt.
Diksha, a student at Leonardo da Vinci Intermediate School 61 in Flushing, stumbled on the word "dachshund" - a short-legged, elongated pooch - giving Thomas an opening

Dachshunds in Pop Culture: Patty Duke

Huh? Anna Marie "Patty" Duke (born December 14, 1946) is an Academy Award-, three-time Emmy Award- and two-time Golden Globe Award-winning American actress of stage and film. On Tuesday, she'll step into the role of the congenially manipulative and casually cruel Madame Morrible in "Wicked" at the Orpheum Theatre, in San Francisco, California. Read more at The San Francisco Chronicle.
Above, Ms. Duke has some fun with her smooth black and tan dachshund 'Bogie' on a day off.

Duke's first major role was playing Helen Keller in the Broadway play The Miracle Worker.

The It Couple

Sign of the Times: Phoebe and Charles, a pair of passionate dachshunds, are what the SPCA staff of Santa Cruz, California, has surmised are husband and wife. They are victims of a tough economy, according to director Lisa Carter.
This duo, like many other purebred dogs, ended up at a shelter.
SPCA staff reports that this loving couple spends time snuggling in their favorite fluffy dog bed and gazing at each other as they nibble kibble.
"When one goes out for a walk, the other cries loudly until their mate returns," Carter said. "Charles and Phoebe are looking to continue their love affair" in a new home.

Vintage Dachshund Poetry

by David Newell for the Juvenile Column of The Boston Herald. Transcribed from The Dachshund or Teckel, Herbert Sanborn, 1937.

This little dog with ten inch clearance
Presents a ludicrous appearance,
His legs are bowed, his feet turn out,
He gives us much to laugh about.

He's two dogs long, a half dog high,
In spite of which he's quick and spry;
So at his funny build don't smirk -
It's perfect for his special work.

For Dachshund plays a hero's role
In going down a badger's hole;
A badger is a savage fighter,
A vicious scratcher and a biter.

And folks who call him "dash-hound" show
Their ignorance and do not know
That dox-hoont is his proper name
In Germany from whence he came.

An Update on Marbles, the Hermaphrodite Dachshund

We're happy to report that 'Marbles,' the hermaphrodite dachshund without a tail is doing great after surgery. Marbles is now 100% boy. The vet could not find any female genitalia in Marbles, and reconstructed his penis. Donations from friends and dachshund lovers all over the country covered his surgery costs, which were $850.
Our friend Johnny Ortez, the LA Small Dogs Examiner offers up a great recap, including a video, don't miss it. Marbles sure is cute running around in that vid.

It's Long. It's Short. Can a dachshund mate with a horse? It seems almost anything is possible nowadays, but this is 'Mayflower,' a pure-bred 12-year-old Shetland pony who lives in the UK. The World Revolves Around Dachshunds

News From the Motherland: It's the 3rd annual dachshund races in Itzehoe, Germany, on April 5th, and dachsies all over the region are no-doubt training for the big event. Above, meet athletic red smooth 'Trudi,' who was last year's champ. Obviously. Translated Source.

Hot Mess Alaskan Booty Call: It's come to my attention the my little boy dachshund is interested in girls! He is a smooth black and tan weiner dog, with a really interesting personality and has been known to be called "the fabio of weiner dogs". He's looking for one lucky lady (or several I guess) to have a one night stand with. Seriously though. He's an awesome dog, but we don't have papers for him. We are willing to negotiate a price/puppy if you are interested. His name is Bruizer, but affectionately known as Bruce Ween. Source.

Dachshund in Charge: Munich, Germany, designers eins:33 have completed the interior of a paper and stationery store in the wealthy Munich suburb of Grünwald. The store is run by a dachshund, apparently. If you have shared the opinion “a dog can not run a paper store” we are happy to widen your mind. Word has it that 'Urmel,' the elegant dachshund-lady rules the brand new store in the shopping arcade of Grünwald, home of Munich’s sparkling society. And indeed, when entering Dressler’s Papeterie a wagging tail arises underneath the presentation counters towards you to give a wet but friendly welcome. You have to bend down quite far to stroke the tousled and unique spiky hair on the little dog’s hat, which made it already on the company logo in first round. Urmel disappears in her integrated dogs hut behind the counter to await the next client. Source.

Have a great day.

27 Dachshunds Rescued in Paris, Tennessee

Meet 4 of 27 Dachshunds rescued on Friday in Paris, Tennessee, after a report of a puppy mill in an upscale home there. The living conditions were described as "extremely horrendous" by Robin McNeil, field investigative officer with the Rolling Hills Humane Society. “It was just filthy and disgusting. I’ve never seen anything this bad. The animals had free run over the house.”
Ms. McNeil said that the home owner said she was breeding and selling the dogs, but it got out of control.
There were also 9 cats and one mixed-breed dog surrendered. The dogs are available for adoption at Rolling Hills Humane Society for $85 including spay/neuter. Read about it at The Paris Post-Intelligencer.

Ten Dachshunds Perish in Fire

Image for Rainbow's End Doxys

We really don't like reporting the news sometimes. It's with an extremely heavy heart that we report that ten of about twenty show Dachshunds were lost in a housefire in Donegal Township, Pennsylvania, on Sunday night. The Dachshunds were owned by Suzanne Digby, who, from what we can ascertain, runs Rainbow's End Doxys.

Suzanne Digby's mother said neighbors and firefighters immediately came to help rescue the dogs. Several were saved, including 14-year-old Oscar, a dog she referred to as another member of the family.

Dachshund Humor

A guy is driving around Tennessee and he sees a sign in front of a house:

"Talking Dog For Sale."

He rings the bell and the owner tells him the dog is in the backyard. The guy goes into the backyard and sees a Dachshund sitting there.

"You talk?" he asks.

"Yes, I do," the doxie replies.

"So, what's your story?"

The doxie looks up and says, "Well, I discovered that I could talk when I was pretty young. I wanted to help the government, so I told the CIA about my gift, and in no time at all they had me jetting from country to country, sitting in rooms with spies and world leaders, because no one figured a dog would be eavesdropping. I was one of their most valuable spies for eight years running. But the jetting around really tired me out, and I knew I wasn't getting any younger so I decided to settle down. I signed up for a job at the airport to do some undercover security wandering near suspicious characters and listening in. I uncovered some incredible dealings and was awarded a batch of medals. I got married, had a mess of puppies, and now I'm just retired."

The guy is amazed.

He goes back up front and asks the owner what he wants for the dog.

"Ten dollars," the guy says.

"Ten dollars? This dog is amazing. Why on earth are you selling him so cheap?"

"Because he's a liar. He never did any of that stuff".

Dachshunds in Pop Culture: Lee Parry

Who? Info on Ms. Parry is a bit scarce, but wikipedia notes: Lee Parry, 14 January 1901 Р24 January 1977, was a German film actress of the silent era. She appeared in 48 films between 1919 and 1939. She was born in Munich, Germany and died in Bad Țlz, Bavaria, Germany.

She also seems to have been some sort of an early Pulp Fiction star: The German Parry was born "Hilde Benz" and began acting in the 1910s. It was only in 1920 that she became a star in Europe. Like other silent film stars she was not made for sound, and her star faded in the 1930s, after which she moved to South America and became a star in theater. However, Parry had a secret: she made use of her spare time to help others in the most direct way possible: through fighting crime and evil. More so than most celebrity adventurers, however, she was active around the world, from Mont-Martre to Upsala to the Rif desert to Whitechapel, and she fought a variety of unusual opponents, from the Lady In Black to the Smiling Muslim to the "Death Club," and she made several good friends, including the Gypsy Princess and the White Knight.

We don't know the names of her handsome dachshunds. If anyone has any more info, please send it in!

Georgia Puppy Mill Pups Find Shelter

Cutie

Meet one of the 57 small dogs and puppies recently surrendered from a Georgia puppy mill. They are being housed at the Hall Humane Society in Gainesville, Georgia. Excerpt from The Gainesville Times:

The dogs, which arrived Wednesday afternoon, are all small breeds: Yorkshire terriers, dachshunds, poodles, papillons, shih tzus, Pekingese, schnauzers, miniature pinschers and chihuahuas.
Humane society president Rick Aiken said he didn’t think the breeders were deliberately cruel. “These animals weren’t being starved,” he said. “But they were somewhat neglected because the breeders had gotten in over their heads (financially) and couldn’t take care of them.”

Dachshunds at Crufts 2009

A Dachshund is judged in the parade ring during the Crufts dog show in Birmingham, central England, March 5, 2009. Photo Source.

Well, all the hoopla aside, Crufts, the "world's largest dog show" has started as planned. The hounds showed yesterday, and it should come as no surprise that a dachshund didn't take the group, as it went to a pharaoh hound.
It's kind of nice for us Yanks that the BBC canceled its Crufts coverage though, because we can watch it live this year at cruftslive.tv. If you become a subscriber, you can watch recorded events. There are also short clips available at the youtube Crufts channel.

If you're unfamiliar with the hoopla across the pond around Crufts, check out EDP24 for a recap. Here's a dachshund lover excerpt: Clare McDonald, 48, of Hevingham, near Aylsham, who has been showing dachshunds with her daughter Laura, 21, for the last 10 years, said it was "disappointing" that the BBC was not broadcasting Crufts this year. "The BBC documentary has made the general public think very badly of pedigree dogs and there was no balanced argument for pedigrees, which has given the dog world a good shake-up," she said.
